Success Story: Digital Product Passport Pilot

Advancing Transparency and Readiness for Future Regulations

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) pilot aimed to prepare Nanso for the upcoming EU regulation, identify gaps and possibilities and strengthen technical and business capabilities for future compliance. The upcoming Ecodesign Sustainable Product Regulation (ESPR) will require greater transparency and traceability of product data across the entire textile sector, driving a fundamental industry shift.

To support this transformation, adesso Finland partnered with Nanso and 1001 Lakes to explore how digital product passports can enhance data collection, transparency, and enable more sustainable business practices. Pilot was part of Finnish Textile and Fashion´s digital product passport (DPP) project which aims to accelerate digitalization in the fashion industry.

From Assessment to a Pilot Implementation

The project was executed in three phases, starting with an industry-wide analysis to identify both general textile sector requirements and Nanso’s specific needs. This was followed by an evaluation of Nanso’s current digital capabilities, data maturity and business processes related to DPP to determine the most effective path forward.

To put theory into practice, the Tasku t-shirt was selected as a use case for DPP-pilot and data was collected from product´s value chain. The final phase focused also on creating a practical roadmap for 2024–2026, outlining key development areas for future adoption.

Enhancing Transparency with Digital Product Passports

Outcome of the pilot was a conceptual use case for the Tasku t-shirt accompanied with a QR code. The pilot demonstrated how product data can be made accessible to consumers—providing visibility into the entire lifecycle, from raw material sourcing to sustainability certifications.

By scanning the QR code, customers can access key product information, from the origin of raw materials, country of manufacture to production period.

Transparency plays a central role in responsible business practices, and the digital product passport pilot provided valuable insights into how brands can make product and sustainability information more accessible to both stakeholders and consumers.

Key Learnings from the Pilot

For Nanso, the project provided a clearer understanding of digital readiness, resource and data collection requirements, and the necessary investments in IT infrastructure to support full-scale DPP implementation.

"Our goal was to proactively prepare for upcoming regulations and build the necessary capabilities for Digital Product Passport. This project gave us a comprehensive understanding of future roadmap, concrete steps we need to take and identified investment needs for example related to our IT systems" explains Rita Holmberg, CEO of Nanso.

Beyond internal development, the project also reinforced the importance of industry-wide collaboration. The transition to digital product passports requires stronger cooperation across the supply chain, to create scalable and effective solutions.

"We’ve deepened our understanding of the necessity to strengthen the collaboration and data sharing with our stakeholders, especially among suppliers and partners. New business models are also required to drive circular economy in the whole textile industry," Holmberg adds.

Building the Future of Digital Product Passports

The DPP pilot resulted with a DPP-roadmap and a practical use case how businesses can prepare for future regulatory demands while improving transparency and data management. The project confirmed that implementing a digital product passport is not just a compliance requirement—it is also an opportunity to build trust, drive operational efficiency, and create new value in a changing industry landscape.
